Company Picnic at Fort Mason

When I picture a summer picnic, I picture watermelons, ice cream, corn hole, frisbees, and of course SUN. Yes, sun is key to a picnic. However, San Francisco is unique. You see, in the summer SF can be one of the coldest cities in the country; tourists from around the world come here to "cool down" in the summer - that's how uniquely cold we are in the summer.

Yesterday was our company picnic, and it definitely had all the above EXCEPT the sun. In fact, we were so lucky we even got light showers! :-) Shine or no shine, the picnic was so much fun mainly because I got to photograph all the cute little kids. Man, two year-olds are FAST, and to make things worse for me they do not like the camera! Here are a few I managed to get that weren't nearly as bad, but can be a lot better if I had a better lens (like a super zoom L lens!). That way I wouldn't have to scare them away with the camera! Some are shot with my point and shoot and some with the SLR. You can probably tell the difference by now. :-)

Stay tuned for Brian's and Jessica's wedding from this past weekend. It was definitely not your typical wedding, and I loved everything about it!

Hank Manuel

It was HOT, and I was shooting outside in the direct sunlight trying to grab some shots for my photography class assignment. Not the best lighting, but being a procrastinator I had no choice. I'm panning everything in sight with a 1% success rate. Hey, it's my first time! My skinny jeans have now become skin jeans and the cute gray shirt I decided to wear becomes a very bad, sweat-spotted idea. So I start to look for air conditioned refuge, and low and behold I stroll by the Hyatt on Embarcadero and decide to walk in. Ahhh, I love AC. As I cool down, I snap some neat pictures of the glowing elevators - again, a failed attempt at panning. I have about 10 minutes before I have to catch the next BART train to head to Berkeley for class, so as I'm going through the shots of the day I hear a voice approach me, "You should let me take a photo of you in front of the sculpture. One day when you're old like me you're gonna say, 'hey! that was the day that elderly man took a photo of me at the Hyatt!'"

I look up, and there standing a comfortable 10 feet away from me is a man who is old enough to be my grandfather. His sweater vest hugs his crisp collared shirt as he stands tall but slightly hunched over. He tells me he visits the Hyatt often to see what kind of tourists come into the city and likes to make friends with anyone who would give an old man their time of day. This is the beginning of our new friendship. We spend the next 20 minutes talking about EVERYTHING! I look at my watch and realize I'm running late for my BART, and he says if I don't mind he would like to take BART with me to Berkeley so we can continue our conversation. I admit, I was a little paranoid at first, but I didn't necessarily get a creepy vibe from him so I agreed to having a BART buddy. Before we board the train he asks me, "Who is the most important person in your life? I'll let you have some time to think about this."

We spend the next 40 minutes on our BART adventure talking about his beloved Filipina wife Estelle who passed away two years ago. "My, she was a beauty." We talk about his service in the United States Air Force. We talk about how I need to replace my "ya" with "yes" because "ya" is just a lazy way of saying "yes" and we don't want to come off as lazy. Yes, this is news to me, and yes, you can bet I slipped with a "ya" more than five times in our conversation where each time I would be met with raised eyebrows. He tells me my shirt is very unique and asks me where I bought it. I tell him I got it from H&M.

"Hank Manuel. That's my name. H&M. Now I bet every time you shop there now you will think of that elderly man who rode BART with me to class that one sunny day in San Francisco." I know he's right.

Next he asks me, "What are the most three important cities in the Philipines?" I'm confused with where this is going, but since Hank has changed the subject more times than I can count I entertain him and tell him, "Manila and..."

"Manila, Chocolate, and Strawberry." He chuckles at his own punchline, his shoulders shrug up and down as he continues to laugh at his own joke. "You know, that's just an old man's joke. What can I say? It keeps me alive these days." I, too, am laughing, not just at the punchline but at how happy I am having this conversation with Hank Manuel. I can tell he misses his wife dearly, but his resilience to live each day with such optimism and humor is inspiring.

The train stops at Downtown Berkeley, and our time is almost up. Hank asks me if I've thought about his question - who is the most important person in my life? I tell him, "I thought long and hard about this. I can say my husband because it sounds like the right answer or I can say my mom because to most people it's their mom or even their dad. But I really think the most important person to me right now is my little sister." He smiles, nods, and tells me, "Your sister is very lucky. But the most important person in your life is YOU. You are on this earth for a reason; you were uniquely created by God to make a difference in this world, and don't you forget that." His eyes become watery, "My wife told me that before she passed away, and I just want to pass that on to you because my wife was a very intelligent woman. Have a good time in your class, Connie."

I ask Hank if I can take his photograph. He surprisingly declines saying photos make him uneasy. I respect that. We hug him and part our separate ways.

Since I like visuals with my blog, here is a photo of a semi-successful panning shot.

Running!

That's it, today I'm picking up my running again. Everyone always told me I was only running before the wedding because all brides want to lose weight to fit into their wedding gown. Well, I had already fit the gown, I just ran more back then because planning is such a stressful process that I needed some kind of outlet! Now, I'm happily married and just peachy staying in with the hubby and Saka watching 90210 and eating ice cream. However, being "peachy" is gonna eventually turn me into a peach. Not so cute.

Wish me luck!

My first wedding. Well, sorta.

I am Mark's DJ assistant. I'm the person who helps him set up his equipment ie. push things around while he does the heavy-duty work and I ask him where everything goes. You think I'd learn by now. I'm the person who makes sure he drinks plenty of water during warm, outdoor weddings and makes sure he eats plenty of food before the event because I know he hardly eats during the event. Most importantly, I'm the person who makes sure he doesn't play the unedited version of "I Like Big Butts" during the reception when the parents and grandparents are on the dance floor... Um... FAIL. Yes, I FAILED the latter role this weekend, and let me tell ya, I will never forget the way the bride's father gave us the oh-no-you-did-NOT-just-play-that-song look. I seriously wanted to melt into a puddle right then and there, but good 'ol Mark recovered so fast that before I could even begin to disintegrate we were already dancing to The Beatles' "Twist and Shout." Phew!!

I'm pretty bummed I didn't take any clear photos of the bride and groom because they were seriously the most gorgeous looking couple I've ever seen in my life. Not only were Eva and Nick exact replicas of J Crew models, they were extremely sweet and genuine, too! Their love for each other was expressed through every wrinkle of their smile, every breath of their laughter, and in every warmth of their hugs. This is a wedding I'll never forget, and I was lucky enough to have some free time to take a few photos to remember their special day.

Stephanie Baker was the wedding photographer, and I seriously adored her and her daughter so much! They were extremely professional and friendly, and they moved about the wedding with such poise and calmness - definitely a skill all photographers need at weddings! She mentioned that she had shot over 30 weddings last year! I visited her website earlier today, and I totally understand why she's so popular. Stephanie, your work is incredibly beautiful and artistic, and you and your daughter are a perfect reflection of such talent and professionalism. It was a pleasure meeting you and Sierra!

Again, I don't have pictures of the bride and groom - sorry! Here are some of the detailed shots I was able to sneak in.

Jammin' on the BART

"Somebody call 911! Shawty fire burning on the dance floor, WHOOOAA!!"

That was me this morning at 7:15am. Yea, I jam on the BART with my iPod full blast. Since I'm in closed quarters it's usually a tad awkward to bust out my JT moves, but once I'm out on the streets of San Francisco you can bet I've got a jig to my walk. That's the great thing about this city - you encounter so many REALLY strange people that me dancing on the sidewalk in full work attire really isn't that out of the ordinary.

We've got a long weekend ahead of us, and I can't wait! Mark and I are heading to Modesto to DJ a wedding on Saturday, and although I dread the heat I'm stoked to get a few photos of the event. Since I'm sure they've got a superb photographer documenting the wedding I'll probably stay out of their hair and get most of the details and some of Mark doing his thang. He's seriously one of the best wedding DJs in the world, not that I'm biased. I always end up being that girl-with-the-DJ dancing in the corner of the reception room to Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get it Started." Who else is going to test the audio speakers? :-P I jam on the BART, I jam at weddings, I practically jam anywhere there's music. Who wants to join me?!

Stay tuned for photos!

Casting call for newborn babies

I'm obsessed with babies. I really am. I'm not obsessed in that way where I WANT one because right now, um, I'm so not there. I'm having way too much fun being married and being belly-less. So I'm making a shameless casting call to all mothers who want free photographs of their newborns. I know I don't have many followers on this blog, yet, and my loyal followers either cannot biologically procreate or have no desire whatsoever to have one. SO, if you're out there, and you stumble upon Connie Sithi's blog and you want to be oh-so-kind to volunteer your baby for photos HOLLERRRR! I'm so excited to start with the babies and work on up to the toddlers and kiddies. Do not be fooled by my enthusiasm - I promise I'm gentle with babies. :-)

And because I like to end my posts with a photo, here's my super duper adorable nephew Brandon (taken with my handy point and shoot)

I have a new baby... well, not like that

Christmas came early for me this year - Mark and I got the MacBook Pro! Yep, after a few weeks of deliberating our next home computer we decided on the glorious MacBook Pro. I was secretly itching for the iMac, but Mark made the final decision to go with the book because he said it would be more practical to have a mobile office so I don't get so tired of working from home all the time. Awww, that's my Jeopardy genius for ya!

One HUGE purchase down, quite a few more to go. :-) Thanks, Husband, for being so supportive of my work and passion! I hope I'm not deceiving everyone into thinking I married a sugar daddy - I actually picked up an extra day of work to help pay for a lot of these things! Although, a sugar daddy sounds pretty sweet right now.

The only complaint so far is - WHERE ARE ALL THE SHORTCUTS?! I've become so proficient with PCs that working on a Mac has me feeling inadequately inept with technology. No worries, I was born intellectually lazy so I'm determined to find all those shortcuts asap.

Say hello to my new baby:
